The cheeks contours have long been accepted as feature of youth. Over time, the soft tissue of the cheeks can migrate or become deflated. This can create a hollowness to the midface and sagging of the overlying skin. In the majority of cases this can be treated by re-aligning the sagging skin and transposing it back the high points of the cheeks to restore a youthful appearance. The best alternative to surgery to achieve this this is PDO, or polydiaxanone, Thread lifts. This innovative technique used in aesthetics will lift the soft tissue and stimulate an increase in collagen production in order to target sagging skin and is a great alternative to a face-lift.

Following a consultation with your SAS Aesthetics doctor, this minimally invasive treatment is carried out by inserting ultra-fine lightweight suture threads into the skin via a small needle/ cannula. The threads act as an anchor within the skin to lift and reinforce its physical structure. Suture threads will naturally dissolve over a number of months. Meanwhile, collagen builds around them to form the long-term effect of a taut, uplifted look and feel to the skin.

PDO Thread Lift procedures are an excellent treatment choice for any area of skin with diminished structure and are most often used to treat areas lacking firmness or a smooth, even texture – such as; the marionette lines and nasolabial folds to realign hanging soft tissue.

Often combined with a number of treatments, PDO Thread Lifts work very well in conjunction with dermal filler treatments and anti-wrinkle injections for an overall effect to create balance and structure as part of our Facial Contouring Packages.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are PDO Threads?

PDO stands for polydioxanone which is a commonly used suture material by surgeons across the world in a variety of procedures. In aesthetics, there are two main types of PDO threads that both tighten and rejuvenate the skin.

  • Regenerative threads are smooth and act by stimulating the body to lay down collagen which in turns reinforces the skins’ natural structure. This process will improve the skins’ laxity, reducing the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and scars.
  • Lifting threads have a more complex design which acts in a Velcro manner to lift the skin without any sutures.
What happens to PDO Threads over time?

PDO threads begin to dissolve after 3 months and depending on your individual metabolism may fully dissolve 6 -12 months after the first treatment. It’s important to note that further treatments will last longer than the first.

Does the thread stay in my skin?

Yes, the thread is dissolvable so over time your body will absorb it fully but until then the PDO thread will remain in place and create a mechanical lift, after it dissolves it creates a biological lift by stimulating collagen neosynthesis in the skin.

Is the treatment painful?

You will receive a local anaesthetic injection for Midface ThreadLift, similar to that used by your dentist, this will numb the area and make the treatment pain free. The effects of the numbing injection will last up to 6 hours.

Which part of the face can I use PDO Threads on?

PDO threads can be used to regenerate or lift the skin. Regeneration threads can be used anywhere in the face and neck to target fine lines, wrinkles and scars.

  • Under eye
  • Upper eyelid
  • Upper lip
  • Cheeks
  • Jowls / Marionette Lines / Nasolabial Folds
  • Neck
  • Under Chin
  • Acne Scars

Lifting threads are used to tighten the skin so can they be used anywhere where you feel the skin would benefit from being pulled for a smoother, tighter result. Most commonly Lifting threads are used as a non-surgical alternative to face lifts in the lower and mid face as well as the forehead, upper eyelid and brows.

Are PDO Threads better than Dermal Fillers?

The two work differently. Dermal fillers replace or add volume to areas of the face where it’s needed. PDO threads lift droopy skin. Depending on each individual case the best results may be achieved through a combination of the two.

Will my skin be more wrinkled after the threads dissolve?

No, as the Midface ThreadLift treatment stimulate collagen your skin will always be more firm and less likely to wrinkle after the treatment.

What are the complications with thread lift?

The Midface ThreadLift treatment is relatively safe, with minor complications such as swelling and bruising however there is a slightly increased risk of infection with PDO threads compared to other treatments, there is a small risk of nerve damage as well a negligible risk of scarring. During your appointment your doctor will explain the measures you must take to avoid and reduce the likelihood of these occurring.

What do I have to avoid before and after the treatment?

As with all aesthetics treatments, consumption of alcohol should be avoided for 12 hours before and after treatment, the same is said for smoking but for 6 hours. Specific to thread lifts, you should avoid strenuous exercise for 2 weeks after the treatment. Some clients maybe advised to go on a liquid diet for 3 -5 after the treatment. Depending on your medical conditions some clients who are diabetic or more prone to infection should take antibiotics for a short period after the treatment.

Other post treatment precautions will depend on which area is treated and will be discussed with you in depth during your clinic appointment.

Who can’t have the treatment?

The Midface ThreadLift treatment is not recommended for pregnant women, those who are unable to avoid strenuous exercise for a period of two weeks such as athletes or those working in the fitness industry. Those with obesity are discouraged from having this treatment.

How often should the treatment be repeated?

For those wanting a more exaggerated lift, a second treatment is recommended 8-12 weeks after the initial lift. For maintenance, a repeat lift is recommended 6-12 months after the first treatment. With each treatment the results will last longer with an annual or bi-annual maintenance recommended for the majority of clients.
